Rugby Borough Council Elections 2024

On 2nd May you will elect local Councillors to sit on Rugby Borough Council for the next 4 years.  Once again every ward in Rugby has a Green Party candidate – people who are committed to making Rugby fairer and greener!

Our message is about the environment in its broadest sense. Rugby is being sacrificed to speculative building development well beyond the requirements of the people of the Borough. Vote Green to ensure you have representatives to challenge the Council on the most important issues in Rugby in the years ahead.

A proven record of success

Green Party Councillors on Warwickshire County Council are already tackling everyday issues from helping new business start-ups, to reducing council excess, to ensuring fair wages for young council employees, showing that a Green voice can make a difference.

But not just in Warwickshire, the Green Party is on the rise throughout the West Midlands. From a mere 3 Councillors in 2010 we are up to 94 today, improving life for residents across the region.

Here in Rugby, these are the main points of our plan:

Affordable and Social Housing

  • A shockingly low proportion of new building development around Rugby includes one and two bedroom homes. We will work to correct this imbalance.
  • Too many new homes are destroying the valuable Green belt around Rugby. We will work towards making sure that as many unoccupied buildings as possible are converted into good homes.

Sustainable Local Economy and Employment

  • Work with local businesses and trade unions to build on the engineering expertise that exists in Rugby to produce items for the Green Energy sector.
  • Regenerate the town centre by utilizing spaces above shops to provide additional flats. This would help receate the toen centre as a vibrant community centre and encourage use of shops located there.
  • Too many large shops now lie vacant in the centre. We would press to use money provided for town centre regeneration to convert these abandoned shops into scandinavian style eco-shops and creative hubs with space for repair cafes, reuse shops and meeting areas for local small businesses and community groups.

Tackling Climate Change

  • Real action to address the long overdue Climate Emergency declaration of 2019. Immediately convene a Citizen’s Assembly to source ideas on steps forward and get the maximum possible buy-in from the residents of Rugby.
  • Taking action to mitigate the effects of climate change especially around the issues of flooding which is blighting the lives of so many residents.

Sustainable Local Communities

  • Helping people have warm, safe homes by accelerating the pace at which empty homes are brought back into use.
  • Campaigning for better insulated homes and public buildings.
  • Ensuring that local communities have the services and amenities they need, particularly transport, health and education.

Transport

  • Ensure that Rugby is properly integrated with West Midland’s metro and light rail plan. This may involve, for example trams or a light railway running between Rugby and Coventry.
  • To push for better facilities for cyclists including secure lockable bike parking in Rugby town centre.
